What I’m Listening To: Funk

I can tell you now that, to my knowledge, only one good thing has come from Trump’s ‘shithole/shithouse’ comments- and that is my rediscovery of my love of funk (via having Brick House stuck in my head 24/7).

I can also confirm that the origins of my fondness for funk are almost certainly rooted in numerous childhood viewings of Muppets from Space.
Watch the sky.

As I write this it’s 7:39 in the morning and I’m actively jamming out to I Got You/I Feel Good by James Brown. With earbuds in, of course.

To specifics:

  • Brick House- Commodores
  • It’s Your Thing- Isley Brothers
  • Shining Star- Earth, Wind, and Fire
  • Thank You- Sly and The Family Stone
  • Get Up Offa That Thing- James Brown
  • September- Earth, Wind, and Fire
  • Get Down Tonight- KC and the Sunshine Band
  • Le Freak- CHIC
  • I Got You- James Brown
  • Stayin’ Alive- Bee Gees
  • Boogie Shoes- KC and the Sunshine Band
  • Shake Your Booty- KC and the Sunshine Band

My familiarity with Le Freak and Thank You owe less to the Muppets and more to 102 Dalmatians and Scooby Doo 2, respectively.

Wow, I feel old.

Words Once More

It’s always interesting to me to take a look at when I’ve opted to take break from posting. During vacations I spend traveling, obviously. And following the election last year.
And then this past week, which ld up to my Dad’s leg amputation surgery yesterday (*Gasp*, I know, but it was planned out, a rational choice, and a long time coming. But that doesn’t make it any less of a big deal, you know what I mean?)

So I’ve been thinking about the best way to ease myself back into posting. Because I miss it an because I have things I want to talk about, but at the same time I’m feeling so completely emotionally blunted and exhausted that I can’t imagine I’d be much fun.

But I realized it’s been a while since I’ve done a words post, and I did have a list accumulating, just in case of the proverbial rainy day like today. Continue reading “Words Once More”

The Best of Mind-Numbing TV

kleinfeld201

I’m likely to be cited in a scholarly paper- about ‘Say Yes to the Dress’, of all things.  How did this happen, I hear you ask?  During my freshman year in college (Spring semester) I took English 120, Reading and Writing the Modern Essay.  Professor Graham was excellent: she introduced me to non-Charlotte’s Web/Stuart Little E.B. White, who is still one of my favorite essayists, and made us wear adhesive mustaches during one class (I forget of what that was apropos)(I hate dangling prepositions).

Anyway, she posted on Facebook recently (yes, we’re Facebook friends) asking if anyone watched ‘Say Yes to the Dress.’ And because I was a bit embarrassed have no shame in owning up to my guilty pleasures, I said ‘Maybe a little.’
Pffft. Maybe a little as in I used to watch it every week after riding lessons while having lunch. So she asked me a few questions about it- What I liked, were the accents notable, etc… Continue reading “The Best of Mind-Numbing TV”

Scooby Dooby Drink

I originally conceived of this as a list of tropes from the original Scooby Doo series, but it would be much more fun as a drinking game, don’t you think?
SO in honor of my being 21 (hahaha, not really, I still can’t figure out how to get a taste for alcohol) I would like to present The Unofficial Scooby Doo Drinking Game.
(I got the complete 1st season of the show as a present (the NOSTALGIA) and have been watching it a bit/fair amount/all the time.)

And thank you to my Dad, the original Scooby Doo fan, for brainstorming with me. Continue reading “Scooby Dooby Drink”

How Old Are You Now?

Yesterday was my birthday, in case you didn’t know (I turned 21) so today I’m planning a brief list of the gifts I opened/received/bought for myself.
