I’m low on sleep. Blame it on ballroom team elections and deliberations last night, which went from 8 pm until 2 am. I know I have the bad habit of comparing everything to the Bataan Death March…
I don’t have a young person’s sleep schedule. I like going to bed and waking up on different days. All I wanted to do today was lie in bed and eat pancakes. (I typed ‘eat panics’ first and now I’m worried about the state of my subconscious).
It’s days like this that I turn to the vicissitudes of the English language, foggily inscrutable even when one has had the most restful of sleeps. Continue reading “Words and Weariness”
It’s always interesting to me to take a look at when I’ve opted to take break from posting. During vacations I spend traveling, obviously. And following the election last year.
And then this past week, which ld up to my Dad’s leg amputation surgery yesterday (*Gasp*, I know, but it was planned out, a rational choice, and a long time coming. But that doesn’t make it any less of a big deal, you know what I mean?)
So I’ve been thinking about the best way to ease myself back into posting. Because I miss it an because I have things I want to talk about, but at the same time I’m feeling so completely emotionally blunted and exhausted that I can’t imagine I’d be much fun.
But I realized it’s been a while since I’ve done a words post, and I did have a list accumulating, just in case of the proverbial rainy day like today. Continue reading “Words Once More”
Anyone here ever watch Word Girl (and her monkey sidekick, Captain Fuzzyface?)
No? Me neither.
It came out around the time I was too old to watch it (early middle school, maybe?) when most of my friends were watching Cartoon Network and Disney Channel and all that. Somehow I kind of skipped right from PBS Kids to Gossip Girl and then to movies and now almost all the movies I watch are R-rates and I have no idea how that happened. Continue reading “Word Up!”
An addition to my ‘choice words’ category, which has, I suppose, become a series. Honestly, I’ve really started to enjoy keeping track of the random words that pop into my head. The American-English language is a pretty amazing thing, it’s as though we plundered all of these other languages and just kept words based on completely arbitrary criteria. Continue reading “I Have the Best Words”
Every once in a while, if you’re me, someone asks you what your favorite word is. Maybe it’s Princeton’s supplement to the Common App. Maybe it’s your obsessive brain at 2 a.m. And, if you’re me, you never know what to say to Princeton or to your 2 a.m. brain.
Well, future Mimsy, and anyone else who is wondering: I started keeping track. And I came up with a lot of words. All over the past week. This may be the first part of a multipart series, because I certainly didn’t thoroughly thumb any dictionary to come up with this collection. No, these are just those words that popped into my head at odd moments, generally sometime between 1 and 3 in the morning.
If you’re here looking for answers to the Princeton Common App addendum: Move on. These words are taken
If, however, you’re searching for some sweet nothings to whisper in the ear of your little grey cells, borrow liberally and without shame. The night is dark and full of terrors.
